Fuel calculations

According to the Zambian High Commission, we will be able to take fuel in drums with us, but may need to pay a levy. It will still be a lot cheaper than buying in Kalabo. At most, a R450/drum levy, but the commission says this should not have to be paid. We'll also have an official letter to help ease our way.

Fuel Calculations

Buying fuel in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe is usually no problem, but the section of Zambia we are traversing has precious few fillling stations, so some serious planning is required.

The Katima - Liuwa - Katima trip looks to be about 1150 Km. Lets make it 1300 to build in a reasonable safety margin. There is also a safety margin built into the fuel consumption figures, so I think we should be safe.

That means that these guys will have sufficient fuel:

Paul O: 1320
Willem: 1330
Andries: 1530
Marc: 1530
Heine: 1360

These Petrol guys will not:

Mike : 640 = 660 @ 4km/l = 165 litres
Andre M: 1120 = 180 @ 4 = 45
Vince : 940 = 360 @ 4 = 90
Clem : 1000 = 300 @ 4 = 75
Johan: 990 = 310 @ 4 = 80
Andre vR: 840 = 460 @ 4 = 115
Mark : 760 = 540 @ 4 = 135

TOTAL: 705 litres petrol
or (If Mike takes the Tdi) 540

These Diesel guys will not:

Mike (again) : 845 = 455 @ 6.5 km/l = 70 litres
Darryl : 1230 = 70 @ 6 = 12
Bernard : 1140 = 160 @ 6 = 30
PSC : 840 = 460 @ 6.5 = 70

TOTAL: 182 litres Diesel
or (If Mike takes the 2.8) 112

If Mike, PSC and Andre vR will each take an extra jerry, then we can prolly get
away with 3 drums (2 of petrol, and 1 of diesel) to be bought at Kalabo from
HRH. If Mike takes the 2.8, then we need 655 litres of petrol, i.e 3 drums of
petrol, and 1 of diesel.

It's actually quite a lot of fuel to get in Kalabo. If we have the drums, we can
of course carry them full from Katima, and perhaps stash them somewhere, esp if
Martin R is available. If he's not there, it may be risky to stash the drums.
I'm assuming fuel will be a lot cheaper in Katima.
